Staff of Magius

A legendary staff held by wizards and sorcerers of legend.

Its wielder may use it to smite opponents. If 1 charge is expended (as a free action), the staff causes double damage (x3 on a critical hit) for 1 round.

The Staff of Magius provides a +3 Deflection bonus to AC and Saving Throws for its wielder, as it constantly guides its user’s hand in defense and grants him/her preternatural insight against attacks.
With a command word, the staff can exhibit varying degrees of light, depending on the force at which the command word is said.
Softly: The staff emits light as a candle, emitting magical light brightly in a 5 foot radius, and dimly in a 10 foot radius.
Normal Tone: The staff emits light as the Light Spell. emanating from the crystal within the dragon’s Talon. The light extends out 30 feet brightly, and an additional 30 feet dimly.
Powerfully: The staff explodes with light, emitting light effectively as the Daylight spell, cast by a spellcaster with the user’s level. The light physically harms undead and creatures dazzled by bright lights in the initial burst, dealing 1d4 points of damage per caster level in a 20-foot radius to all such creatures.

Continual flame (1 charge)
Levitate (1 charge)
Shocking Spark (1 charge)
Fireball (2 charges)
Cone of cold (2 charges)
Burning Hands (2 charges)
Hold monster (2 charges)
Dalamar’s Lightning Lance (3 charges)
Wall of force (in a 10-ft.-diameter hemisphere around the caster only) (3 charges)
Globe of invulnerability (3 charges)

The Staff of Magius has a maximum storage of 50 charges, which can be replenished naturally or with the wielder’s own magical powers.

Every day, the staff recharges 1 charge. If the wielder desires, they can sacrifice daily spells to charge the staff even more. As often as desired, the wielder of the staff can sacrifice a spell slot that he/she could otherwise cast during the day into the staff, which recharges the staff a number of charges equal to the level of the sacrificed spell.


One of the most famous items in Dragonlance lore,
even though it is not the most powerful, is the Staff of
Magius. Created during the First Dragon War in the
Age of Dreams by a Silvanesti Elf named Shadra, the
staff was passed from her to many powerful wizards,
until it came into the possession of Magius during the
Third Dragon War. Magius used the staff in battle
against the hordes of Takhisis, alongside his friend
Huma Dragonbane.

When Magius was captured by
Galan Dracos, the staff was left with Huma, who
used it to shatter the Emerald Orb of Dracos. The
staff was then taken by the Solamnic Knights and
given to the Wizards of High Sorcery. The staff remained
at the Tower of Wayreth until the Test of
young Raistlin Majere, who earned the Staff by completing
his Test of High Sorcery. Raistlin famously
used it for years, until his disappearance into the
Abyss, after which the staff was locked up in the
Tower of Palanthas. Given to Raistlin’s nephew, Palin
after his own Test, the staff served the young
White Robe well until the Chaos War. At the conclusion
of the war, a disguised avatar of Takhisis took
the staff. The Staff of Magius has not been seen

The Staff of Magius is a long, mahogany wood

staff, topped with a 3-clawed dragon’s talon clutching
a crystal sphere. Its powers are said to change with
each user, although this cannot be easily confirmed.
